POLICY & RESEARCH

By undertaking evidence based research, and providing expert advice into all aspects of reuse systems, we help NGOs, governments and public sector organisations build a credible case for the benefits of reuse

We cannot ignore the waste crisis we are facing but with good design and the right regulatory framework, we can create better, reusable, packaging systems.

The current blocker to progress is, without focused legislation to create a level playing field, even the most committed brands and retailers face a first-mover disadvantage.

We are working hard to create an evidence base for the triple benefits of reuse (commercial, operational, environmental) in order to engage key stakeholders from government, industry and civil society to support the transition.

Some recent examples of our work

  • Reusable Packaging Roundtables, UK Plastics Pact/ WRAP

In 2022, WRAP brought together members of The UK Plastics Pact to deliver a series of industry roundtables focused on driving reuse at scale. Unpackaged prepared and facilitated the round tables, and wrote the summary report of insights and recommendations. Download the report

  • A Just Transition to Reusable Packaging, Rethink Plastic Alliance

In-depth research for Rethink Plastic Alliance into the socio-economic aspects of reuse and how effective, just and inclusive packaging reuse systems can create social, economic and environmental benefits. Download the report

  • Plastic Perspectives, Client Earth/ VBDO

Contributing practical, expert guidance on reuse to a benchmark report produced by environmental law charity Client Earth and the Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development to educate and influence the investor community. Download the report

  • Consultation on Reuse Targets, UK Plastics Pact/ WRAP

We lead the consultation on an aspirational reuse target-setting exercise for the UK Plastics Pact. We designed the consultation, analysed the results and delivered key recommendations for WRAP and UK Plastics Pact members

  • Setting Targets on Reusable Packaging in Grocery Retail, Greenpeace UK

We undertook a modelling exercise and created a briefing document on reuse targets, for both primary and transit packaging, for Greenpeace to use to inform and influence the retail and FMCG sectors. Download the report

  • Thought Leadership

The Unpackaged team regularly contribute reuse expertise to industry conferences, government policy groups; in print and broadcast media, as well as on social media and a host of podcasts. See our recent guest blog post for WCL and listen to Catherine on various podcasts here
